Understanding Shab e Barat


Shab e Barat, also known as the Night of Forgiveness in Islam, holds deep spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide. Falling on the 15th night of the Islamic month of Sha’ban, it’s a time for believers to engage in prayer, reflection, and seeking forgiveness from Allah. This night is believed to be when Allah determines individuals’ destinies for the upcoming year, offering a chance for repentance and renewal. Communities gather in mosques and homes, offering extra prayers, reciting Quranic verses, and making supplications for blessings and mercy. Shab e Barat Nafil / Prayer

Shab e Barat : Night Of Forgiveness

Perform special prayers on the night of Shab-e-Baraat:

After Maghrib, pray 6 rakats of Nafil prayer (2+2+2). After every two rakats, recite Surah Yaseen once or Surah Iklas (Surah Qul) 21 times, followed by dua Nisf e Shaban.

This special prayer, by the grace of Allah, promises a healthy and prosperous life for the entire year. After Maghrib or Isha prayer, recite Surah Yasin three times, and after each recitation, make dua Nisf e Shaban with the following intentions:

  1. For Long Life: Perform 2 rakats of Nafil prayer, then recite Surah Yasin followed by dua Nisf e Shaban with the intention of seeking a long and righteous life.
  2. For Protection from Calamities: Perform 2 rakats of Nafil prayer, then recite Surah Yasin followed by dua Nisf e Shaban with the intention of seeking protection from calamities and misfortunes.
  3. For Increase in Subsistence: Perform 2 rakats of Nafil prayer, then recite Surah Yasin followed by dua Nisf e Shaban with the intention of not being dependent on anyone except Allah for sustenance.

Dua-e-Nisf-e-Shabaan in English

Allaahumma Yaa Zal-manni wa laa yamunnu ‘alayh, yaa Zal-jalaali wal-ikraam, yaa zat-tawli wal-‘in’aam. Laa ilaaha illaaa Anta Zahrullaajiinaa, wa jaarul-mustajiiriina, wa Amaanulkhaa-‘ifiin.

Allaahumma in kunta katabtanii ‘indaka fii ‘ummil-kitaabi shaqiyyan ‘aw mahruuman ‘aw matruudan ‘aw muqattaran ‘alayyna fir-rizqi famhu..

Allaahumma bi-fazlika shaqaawatii wa hirmaanii wa tardii waqtitaara rizqi, wa ‘asbitnii ‘indaka fii ‘ummil-kitaabi sa’iidam-marzuuqammuwaffaqal-lil-khayraati, fa innaka qulta wa quwlukal-haqqu, fii kitaabikal-munzali, ‘alaalisaani Nabiyyikal-Mursali, yamhullaahu maa yashaa-‘u wa yusbitu wa ‘indahuu ‘ummul kitaab ‘Ilaahi bit-tajallyil-‘a-zami, fii laylatinnisfi min shahri sha’baanal-Mukarrami, ‘allatii yufraqu fiihaa kullu ‘amrin hakiiminw-wa yubramu, ‘an takshifa ‘annaa minal-balaaa-‘i wal balwaaa-‘i maa na’lamu wa maa laa na ‘lamu, wa Anta bi-hii ‘a’lam. Innaka Antal-‘a’azzul-Akram. Wa sallalaahu ta’aalaa ‘alaa sayyidinaa Muhammad-dinw-wa ‘alaaa ‘aalihii wa sahbihii wa sallama Wal-Hamdu lillaahi Rabbil-Aalameen.

HADITH ON NIGHT OF DECREE

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that she said: “O Messenger of Allah, what do you think I should say in my supplication, if I come upon Laylatul-Qadr?” He said: “Say: ‘Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni (O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me).’

There are many hadiths emphasize the significance of the 15th of Shaban. In one such narration by Ibn Ali, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ ) stated:

When it is the fifteenth of Shaban, then stand (in worship) at Night and fast during the day. Because Allah descends in this Night at sunset to the first heaven and says: ‘Is there any seeker of forgiveness, that I may forgive him? Is there any seeker of sustenance that I may sustain him? Are there anyone in affliction, that I may remove his affliction? Is there anyone like this, like that (and so on)’. This continues until Fajr.”

Spiritual importance of Shab e Barat

Shab e Barat is a spiritually significant night for Muslims. It’s a time for deep reflection, heartfelt repentance, and seeking Allah’s forgiveness. Many Muslims spend the night in prayer, reciting Surah Yaseen and making sincere duas for mercy and blessings. We believe Allah forgives and showers His kindness on those who genuinely turn to Him with a repentant heart on this sacred night.

On Shab e Barat, do religious things:

  1. Night Prayers (Tahajjud): Pray special prayers called Tahajjud. Pray sincerely, asking Allah for forgiveness and good things.
  2. Reciting the Quran: Read and think about the Quran’s verses all night. Reading the Quran is thought to bring blessings and make people feel spiritually connected on this special night.
  3. Giving Charity and Doing Good: On the Night give to charity and help others on Shab e Barat. Helping the poor and needy is seen as really good on this night.
  4. Asking for Forgiveness: Ask Allah to forgive us for the bad things we’ve done. If they truly feel sorry, we believe Allah will forgive us and make our hearts pure.
  5. Before asking forgiveness from Allah: it’s important to apologize and seek forgiveness from your mother, father, brothers, sisters, friends, and relatives if you’ve done anything wrong to them. It’s a way of showing remorse and repairing any hurt or harm caused by your actions.

Cultural Traditions on Shab e Barat

Besides religious activities, Shab e Barat is also known for different cultural customs and traditions around the world. Some of these include:

  1. Lighting Lamps: People light decorations in their homes or mosques as a symbol of enlightenment and spiritual growth. on Shab e Barat: Night of Forgiveness
  2. Visiting Graves: Muslims visit the graves of their loved ones on Shab e Barat to pray for their souls and ask for blessings for the departed.
